Hassocks Sussex : The Ditchling Press, 1939. Soft cover. Very Good -. Pamphlet in blue stapled wraps. Reprinted from the Weekly Review, Nine Essex Street, W.C.2. Original price 3 D. No marks to text; light age-toning, some rusting at the staples and soiling to nearby paper therefrom. No publication date stated, but first edition thought to be 1939. Takes pains to argue the Moscow / Communist backing of the International Brigade, and that it was not formed from spontaneous goodwill only. What it does not dwell on is that there were other leftist, socialist and anarchist groups with no Communist backing, which were opposed to Communists and the control of Moscow. The socialist POUM (which George Orwell joined) and anarcho-syndicalist groups such as the Durruti Column, the IWA and the CNT are examples. The well-funded International Brigade was, however, the largest column largely composed of foreigners to be fighting in common against the nationalist forces of Franco, who were backed by Nazi Germany, fascist Italy, and fascist Portugal. 46 pp.
