About This Item

This is a beautifully illustrated, antique copy of "THE INGOLDSBY LEGENDS" - or, Mirth and Marvels by Thomas Ingoldsby. 1911; Macmillan and Co.; London. With 16 full-page color plates by H.K. Theaker, as well as a few black & white in-text illustrations. The book is a collection of myths and ghost stories that blend humor with the grotesque. Here are a few examples of the stories: The Witches' Frolic; The Ghost; The Spectre of Tappington; The Tragedy; The Dead Drummer; Raising the Devil...and many more. The page edges are (intentionally) stained blue on all sides of the text block.

Condition:
There is a very light stain near the top-right corner of the front cover; some fading of the blue cloth at the center of the back cover; light wear to the cover corners. Tiny cloth tears at the top and bottom edges of the spine. There is a small 1/4" cloth tear at the bottom edge of the back cover. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Nice interior - the pages are lightly age-toned, but mostly clean with only a small stain at the outer margin of pages 162 & 163. The tissue guard over the frontispiece is heavily tanned. Name/address/date (1960) written in pen on the front pastedown. Tanning to the end papers, and foxing to the pastedowns. The blue page staining at the bottom edge of the text block has faded at the outer edge. Overall the book is in Very Good condition.

Synopsis

The Ingoldsby Legends are a collection of myths, legends, ghost stories and poetry supposedly written by Thomas Ingoldsby of Tappington Manor, actually a pen-name of Richard Harris Barham. The legends were first printed in 1837 as a regular series in Bentley's Miscellany and later in New Monthly Magazine. The legends were illustrated by John Leech and George Cruikshank. They proved immensely popular and were compiled into books published in 1840, 1842 and 1847 by Richard Bentley.
