About This Item

London: J. M. Dent & Co. Aldine House, 1898. Undetermined. near fine. 1st Edition. 638pp. Octavo. Handsomely rebound in a rich green leather with gold gilt lettering and decorations stamped to the front, back and spine; the decorations correspond to some of the legends. Five decorative raised bands to the spine. All edges gilt. Gold gilt inside dentelles. Hand-sewn headbands. Marble endpapers. 12 full page colour plates and 90 black and white illustrations throughout the text. Previous owner's bookplate to front pastedown. Inner contents clean and binding tight; overall, a beautiful book in near fine condition. near fine An attractive book notable for both Rackham's fantastical illustrations and the detailed binding. A collection of myths and legends by Ingoldsby--the pen name for an English clergyman named Richard Harris Barham--is in actuality quite humorous, with parodies of medieval folklore and poetry wonderfully brought to life by Rackham's illustrations. A lovely and unique copy. 1898

Synopsis

The Ingoldsby Legends are a collection of myths, legends, ghost stories and poetry supposedly written by Thomas Ingoldsby of Tappington Manor, actually a pen-name of Richard Harris Barham. The legends were first printed in 1837 as a regular series in Bentley's Miscellany and later in New Monthly Magazine. The legends were illustrated by John Leech and George Cruikshank. They proved immensely popular and were compiled into books published in 1840, 1842 and 1847 by Richard Bentley.
