About This Item

Philadelphia:: Carey and Hart, 1844., 1844. Tall 12mo.192 pp. Frontispiece, 5 engraved plates; foxing. Contemporary half-calf, marbled boards; corners showing, else very good. The Ingoldsby legends were first printed in 1837 in Bentley's Miscellany and later in New Monthly Magazine. Their popularity with readers resulted in their being collected to a book which went under a number of editions. The stories themselves range from retellings of folktales, to original stories, however most of the legends are satirical takes on common legends and myths.

Synopsis

The Ingoldsby Legends are a collection of myths, legends, ghost stories and poetry supposedly written by Thomas Ingoldsby of Tappington Manor, actually a pen-name of Richard Harris Barham. The legends were first printed in 1837 as a regular series in Bentley's Miscellany and later in New Monthly Magazine. The legends were illustrated by John Leech and George Cruikshank. They proved immensely popular and were compiled into books published in 1840, 1842 and 1847 by Richard Bentley.
