New York. Russell & Russell. 1965. Reissue.. Hardback, 8.5 x 6 inches. In maroon cloth covers with gilt to spine. In plain brown paper dustwrapper. In very good near fine condition. Minor bumps to corners, else cover clean and smart. In plain brown dustwrapper, with holes over spine lettering. Inside pages all very clean and tight throughout. Small neat pencil inscription to front endpaper “S. Cox, Beaminster.” A couple of very small minor foxing spots to outer page edges, else a very good clean and tight copy. Else a clean and tight copy. 146 pp. With b&w photograph of Stinsford Church and sketch map of the county. This book is all that remains from Hardy’s first novel, The Poor Man And The Lady, which he wrote in 1867 but never published in its original form. He then dismembered it, using passages, perhaps whole chapters, in other early novels like Under The Greenwood Tree. Originally published in 1935.
