P J Thomas, Printer. San Francisco. 1891. First English Translation Edition., 1891 Book size about 4 3/4 by 6 3/4 inches with some 240 pages. Bound in brown cloth with front cover image of a seated Indian in black; black decorations; gilt lettering. Spine blank. Frontis, six full page plates, one single page drawing on reverse of a text page. Total of eight Illustrations as called for in the list at the rear. This is the first English translation of the book originally published at New Ulm, Minnesota in 1876 regarding the Sioux depredations of 1862 in that area. Gruesome reading. Book with corners bumped; light wear at tips and spine top/bottom; a few pages with shallow edge chipping; one page with a double tear and edge fold back at the tears; previous owner name and date (1893) in pencil on FFEP. A book printed on inexpensive unusually high acid content paper resulting in age toning and fragility.
