Originally published by Thomas Y Crowell, this edition is from the Famous Horse Stories series with the series device on the jacket spine and front cover. When Little Falcon chose a mare from the herd to be his horse, his father was disappointed. But the mare soon gave birth to a sturdy colt. Shadow was strong and swift, showing the blood of his sire, a wild stallion. Little Falcon began to train his colt. Slowly, patiently, he worked to bring out the virtues the gentle mare and the fierce old stallion had bequeathed to their shadow. When disaster drove the colt to the wild band, Little Falcon set out to search for his pony. Horse thieves, wolves, cold and hunger could not daunt Little Falcon, who returned at last to the camp, triumphantly riding his painted pony.
