"Jeff Riddle as a boy watched while U.S. General Canby and other Peace Commissioners were shot by the angered Modoc chief, Captain Jack, and his men. Riddle was a relation of Captain Jack's, and grew up to write a history of the Modoc tragedy which is unique among native American documents of that early period for its attention to detail, chronology, and careful presentation of evidence."
