The story begins with an introduction to Mrs. Graham, a widow who receives a small pension because she lost her husband to the war. It is barely enough to keep her living. But she makes do, and because she is a gentle woman and kind hearted she even takes care of stray dogs and cats on her limited means. Then Nat May, the town's old school teacher returns to town. He is nearly blind and " with a faint mist across his pleasant mind". He has what he thinks will be a great invention, but no money, and is about to have to go to the poorhouse. That is, unless someone will take him in .....
