About This Item
Nancy: Joan. Bapt. Cusson. Good with no dust jacket. 1714. Leather. 221 pgs, original blanks. Sigs A6-T6. 32mo (4" x 2.5") (10.5 mm x 6 mm) in 6. What appears to be original calf binding, 4 raised bands to the spine with gilt in the compartments, classically French. Corners are rubbed, joints are cracking with some loss of leather but threads/binding holding strong. Interior verso of last endpaper has old brown ink notation but otherwise unmarked. Some copies have a frontis piece, this one appears never to have had it bound in. Title page with IHS in a rose, each page with a ruled border, head pieces at each of the 4 books. Paper is clean and strong. This lovely little Imitation of Christ was obviously loved but cared for. Jean-Baptiste Cusson (1663-1732) originally worked in Paris but came to Nancy in 1711 where he printed many devotional books. He especially loved the Imitation of Christ and printed it numerous times, especially after the 1721 edition, a tradition carried on by his heirs. Although he followed the Parisian text of the De Imitatione he is supposed to have made his own translation of the beloved work. A charming copy of a surprisingly scarce edition, only a few copies in North America. OCLC 78950171; 32mo 4" - 5" tall; 221 pages .
