Titlepage vignettes, full-page portraits of Gerson holding cross and of Constantino Caietano (1560-1650), who was custodian of the Vatican Library. . Octavo 155x110mm near contemporary vellum gilt ruled (ties lacking), All Edges Rouge. Some marks on vellum & small pipe ash damage to 1st few pages, else clean and crisp throughout, 454pp + privilege leaf dated 1709. Two small holes to blank endpaper & titlepage leaving the attributed name as G*RSO*E (privilege leaf mentions Gerson also). Some edge dusting but mainly to endpapers and first and last pages. Print very clear and legible. *In original arguments about authorship of this famous devotional book, which now is firmly established to be by A'Kempis, Constantino Gaetani (1560-1650) held that it was by Giovanni Gersen (1363-1429), and this was the official Catholic Church view under Innocent X, who was elected Pope in the year this edition was published. One previous edition (1616).

Frontis, titlepage +[14] +352pp some misnumbered but collated complete. Text foxed & browned but paper still quite crisp, stable & tight. The plates printed on different paper and are all unfoxed, and aside from slight marginal browning are whiter than the text. *Translated by William Fleetwood from Curiositez de la Nature et de l'Art sur la Ve�ge�tation, but author's & translator's names do not appear. This English version pre-dates the French first edition as given in British Library catalogue, and the chapter order does not correspond with the French.
