About This Item
Edinburgh, Scotland: W. H. Lizars, 1833. Ex-library. Marbled boards half-bound in dark green leather. Five raised bands on the spine with gilt lettering on red background, and gilt decoration. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. 538 numbered pages. No illustrations. From Zimmer, as quoted in the Smithsonian Institution Library Catalog: "Although issued partly in connection with the volume of plates, under the same title (at the time of issue), text and plates were purchasable separately and the publishers ... express the hope, also voiced by the author in his preface to the present work, that the text will constitute an independent work of reference. Vol. I was issued originally in 1825 .... Vol. II [this volume] was prepared according to the arrangement proposed by Vigors and to make the two volumes uniform, Selby revised vol. I and reissued it in altered form with the first and only edition of vol. II". This is an ex-library copy, but the only library markings are a call number on the spine tail, repeated on the copyright page, and an embossment on the title leaf. There is some scuffing to the joints. The corners have small worn-through spots, and there is light shelfwear. The front hinge is just starting to crack, but with no mesh showing. The endpapers have spots of foxing. This is a very handsome copy of a scarce title.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Ex-Library.
