About This Item

THIS RARE LIMITED EDITION CONTAINS 39 ILLUSTRATIONS BY EDMUND DULAC, WITH 28 FULL-COLOR PLATES
THE WORKS OF ART ARE SOME OF THE MOST INCREDIBLE EVER TO ADORN A POE BOOK
THIS IS A LARGE-SIZED SPECIAL EDITION THAT MEASURES 12.25'' X 9.25''
INCLUDES 45 OF POE'S MOST MONUMENTAL POEMS AS WELL AS RARE TITLES FROM HIS YOUTH

As you can tell from my collection, I own a lot of Poe books, more than anyone I have ever known, and this is the only edition of Poe's poetical works I have ever found with these Edmund Dulac illustrations. They are, without question, some of the most hauntingly beautiful paintings ever created for a compendium of his works.

Ignored throughout the author's lifetime, the poems of Edgar Allan Poe, compiled here, remain masterpieces of the poetical genre more than a century and a half after their original publication. This is one of the most beautiful collections of the late Mr. Poes ever compiled. The illustrations done by Dulac are some of the greatest ever to grace a Poe book (If not the greatest ever), coupled with a stunning Victorian-era style binding with elaborate tooling. This will certainly suffice for anyone looking for a complete and elegant edition of Edgar's works.

Readers who have been terrified or moved by the works of Edgar Allan Poe are in for a wondrous experience when they open this exquisite collection of Poe's poems. The illustrations of Edmund Dulac perfectly match the mysterious, brooding vision of Poe's works. Only Poe's experiences could have been the inspiration behind these poems. Here is the tortured soul laid bare-the fascinating creations of a pure romantic imagination imprisoned by the horrors and miseries of reality. Living in constant poverty and rejected by family, friends, and critics, Poe led a stormy existence, finding first comfort and ultimately destruction in his habits. These factors have intensified his creative genius throughout his life. Poe clung to his dreams. The best of Poe's works are like dreams, bathed in unreality and indefiniteness but exhibiting the underlying logic that all dreams contain and expose eternal truths. The stereotypes of romantic poetry are tempered and personalized here by the inner torment of the poet; the elements of horror, which become almost melodramatic in Poe's prose, are refined in the poetry, creating an underlying otherworldly atmosphere. Poe's insights will bring the reader to a new understanding of his inner motivations and desires. Dulac, the outstanding early twentieth-century illustrator, had, like Poe, the genius to abandon his contemporaries' conventional, realistic style and present a world of images and dreams. He was primarily responsible for the splendor of book illustration in the earlier years of this century. The color illustrations accompanying these poems are more than a recapitulation of the text. Dark and melancholy or soft and romantic, each picture gives new life to the images in the poetry. A finer interpreter of Poe's magic is difficult to imagine.

The overall condition of this book is very good, especially considering that it is now 23 years old, with some typical age and shelf wear associated with a printing of this age. A few pages have a light corner crease, a typical instance when someone wants to return and read their favorite page in a book. Overall, it has been exceptionally well kept and displays very fine details. All of the Dulac artwork is intact, complete, and in meticulous condition.
