About This Item
London: Nonesuch, 1931. Hardcover. Near Fine. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. A numbered, limited edition, two volume set of The Iliad and The Odyssey published by Nonesuch in 1931. Each volume includes the Greek from the Oxford University Classical texts, and Alexander Pope's original English translation. The Iliad is Pope's 1715 translation. It is number 941 of 1450 copies. The Odyssey is Pope's 1725 translation. It is number 366 of 1300 copies. Both books are bound in full morocco, with spines having five raised bands with gilt titles, and measure 10 ½" by 6". The top edges are gilt, while the bottom and fore edges are untrimmed. The endpapers are marbled, as are the slipcases. Both slipcases have wear and rubbing to top, bottom, and corners. Their condition is good. Each book has a faint 3/16th inch penciled number on the back free endpaper. Aside from these there are no other markings in either volume. There are no bookplates, no tears, and no folds. There is no toning or foxing. The free front endpaper in The Odyssey has small tears at the hinge over the stitching, which does not affect the soundness of the hinge. In both volumes the hinges and joints are sound. The condition of the covers and corners is excellent. The two volumes are beautiful copies in near fine condition.
