About This Item
Londini Ex Officina I.[ohn] R.[edmayne] ,, 1659.. 1659 12mo. Collates *12, A - F12, G6 (G6 blank). Fourth edition. Engraved frontispiece. Contemporary blind ruled sheep, rubbed. Discretely rebacked with the original spine preserved. Small worm track affecting a letter or two of text in the top inner corner of the first section and some contemporary pen trials on front endpaper, otherwise a very good copy in sound, original condition. Ruggle's comedy ultimately derives its plot from Plautus, but with much additional sub-plot of his own. It was watched by James I in 1615 during his visitation of Clare Hall and in a letter to Sir Dudley Carleton, dated March 16, John Chamberlain wrote: '. . . the second night was a comedies of clare hall with the helpe of two or three goode actors from other houses, wherin Dauid Drommond in a hobby-horse, and Brakin the recorder of the towne vnder the name of ignoramus a common-lawier bare great parts: the thing was full of mirth and varietie, with many excellent actors . . . but more then halfe marred with extreme length.' The king is said to have liked it sufficiently to have visited Cambridge for a second performance in the same year.
