Tennyson's revamp of King Arthur and the legends of the Holy Grail. Balin and Balan are brothers who have transgressed and been exiled from Arthur's court. They redeem themselves and are trusted with various chivalrous errands, through demon ridden forests to the court of the Court of Pellam a former ally of the court. Unfortunately all does not go well and eventually, whilst Balin is in the grip of a mad rage to which he is prone, he and Balan fight and kill each other. Vivien who is a supporter of the old pagan ways and opposed to Arthur and his new order of chivalry has a hand in causing Balan's fall from grace and his eventual demise. In Merlin and Vivien, she continues with her devious plans and seduces Merlin (now getting old and feeble) forcing him to pass on to her one of his darkest spells which she uses against him and ensnares him in a prison of invisibility. She leaves him thus entombed in an oak tree in the forest of Broceliande. Volumes 2,4 and 5 also listed!* A NEAR GD copy with some cover faults and slight age. No dust jacket.*
