On August 13, 1961, East Germany started stretching barbed wire along the border between East Germany and West Germany, in violation of the Four-Power Pact that governed Berlin. The author "dramatically reconstructs the tangled skein of events that led up to the building of the Wall, and demonstrates how Nikita Khrushchev turned the crisis into an international poker game between John F. Kennedy and himself." -- dust jacket. In addition to his political and economic analysis, Cate covers the impact of the Wall's erection on residents of the city.
