About This Item

Boise, ID: The Idaho First National Bank, 1974. First Edition [stated], presumed first printing. Hardcover. Fair/Fair. The format is approximately 11.5 inches by 15 inches. 207, [1] pages. Illustrations. Bibliography. Index. DJ is illustrated front and back and has wear, soiling, tears and chips. Front flap is creased. Front and back hinges are weak and has been reglued. Binding is hurt but interior remains strikingly colorful and effective. This is an oversized book that, if shipped outside of the United States, would require an additional shipment payment. Robert O. Beatty was a former Assistant Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare who was a conservationist, author and publisher. He served as Assistant H.E.W. Secretary for Public Affairs from 1971 to 1973 under the then Secretary, Elliott L. Richardson. Mr. Beatty was president of R.O. Beatty & Associates, a publishing company. He wrote the text for a pictorial book on Idaho and had just published a similar book on Nevada, of which his son David was coauthor. He wrote more than 100 technical and popular articles on conservation and related subjects. After graduating from the University of Michigan in forestry, communications and wildlife management in 1946, Mr. Beatty went to work for the Izaak Walton League of America, a volunteer conservation group. He later worked in public relations for timber companies, including the Boise Cascade Corporation, where he was director of communications from 1965 to 1971. He left that post to go to Washington. Mr. Beatty belonged to the Wildlife Management Institute, American Fishery Society, The Wildlife Society, The Wilderness Society, National Audubon Society and the Sierra Club, among others. The dramatic photographs in this book are a distillation of almost 10,000 shots submitted by over 90 photographers. The journey begins with a portrayal of the early days in Idaho Territory, blending a collection of fascinating old photographs with recent color scenes of old places. All of the state's regions and sub-cultures--the Rocky Mountains, the Snake River plain, the Owyhee plateau, the magnificent and primitive Salmon River uplands, the historic Nez Perce "palouse" country, and the northland of emerald lakes bordering Canada, are display in an exciting format. A striking section on Idaho textures--wood, rocks, sand, ice, water, lichens, snow--completes a memorable portrayal of a lively state.
