England. Airlife. 1988 1st.. 9.0 x 6.25 inches. In light brown cloth covers with gilt to spine. With illustrated dustwrapper. Maps to endpapers. In very good condition with very good dustwrapper. (d/w. spine slightly faded. Slightly creased along top edge. Not price clipped). A clean and tight copy. 357 pp. With b&w photographs, and maps. An expedition to reach the North Pole from the USA in 1879 foundered after the ship was trapped in ice for two winters and then crushed. The survivors struggled to reach land, in Siberia. The facts were covered up for a century, but here are exposed in all their horror.
