London: Smith, Elder & Co, 1866. First Edition in English. HB. Brown cloth with elaborate gilt designs and lettering on front cover and spine, 8vo, x, 54, xviii, xv, 11, 20 pp.. all edges of text block gilt, brown endpapers. Addenda and Errata page near rear. Book plate of Antoinette Quinby Scudder (1888-1958), playwright and artist, on front paste-down. Dickins (1838-1915) first came to Japan as a Royal Navy doctor in 1863, spending 3 years at Yokohama. After a short return to England, Dickins returned to Japan for 8 further years. No marks in book, binding tight. Backstrip damaged, with 1/2 inch lacking at top, two tears, and section reglued. Covers show light edge wear. Book condition Good+,
