When Charles Hunting purchased two wooden sailing ships in 1874 he founded the business now known as Hunting plc, which would grow to encompass various interests in the maritime, aviation, engineering, and petro-chemical fields with subsidiary companies spread world-wide. Perhaps best known for its aviation interests, the company purchased Percival Aircraft in 1944 and later designed and built the Hunting Jet Provost, a very successful training aircraft for the RAF. The family name is also associated with Hunting-Clan, an independent airline which was eventualy absorbed by British United Airways in the 1960s.
