Benedict Révoil, who traveled around the United States in the mid-1800s hunting gameIn the Preface by Adams, he describes how Révoil had a "faculty of observation which makes his volume pleasant reading,'' as well as contributes to our understanding of nature, the habits & characteristics of the animals he hunted, trapped, & shot & the "curiosities of animal life.and natural history." In 393 pages + 6 pp of ads for other titles in rear, illustrated profusely with engravings throughout by French artist Yan (Jean-Edouard) Dargent (name on drawings, otherwise unattributed). A First Edition from 1874, this hardcover book has brown cloth stamped & decorated in black with design & lettering to front & spine in gilt. Condition is VG-/G+: quite clean overall, gilt bright & unfaded, text block securely stitched, but some pages in front matter starting to loosen at top. Rubbing to extremities, with cloth loss at lower spine & lower-outer corners of both boards. Spine has been reglued at front joint, with fraying & splitting still evident. Both hinges intact, gutter splitting at title page. Pages supple, but with significant tanning & foxing, heavier in front matter & to all endpapers. Faded inscription dated 1874 on ffep.
