Cambridge: W. Innys et al, 1744. Leather bound. Very good. Hogarth. 2 vols. xxxxvi, 424, 446 pp. 21 cm. Engraved portrait frontispiece of Butler and engravings I to IX in volume 1. Plates X to XVI are in volume 2. Full leather with raised bands. Rebacked with original spines. Volume 2 has small stain on front board. Gold bookplates for "Honble Robert Smith" on front endpapers. Endpapers foxed but only light foxing throughout. Plate 16 stained.
Satirical poet Samuel Butler (1612-1680) is chiefly remembered for this burlesque poem on Puritanism. The preface is by Zachary Grey, priest, controversialist and conservative spokesman for the Church of England. The extensive subscribers list includes Samuel Johnson and Horatio Walpole. Both volumes indexed.
