About This Item
[TWAIN, MARK] [Clemens, S. L.] Edison, Thomas. HUCKLEBERRY FINN, PREMIER QUARTET. [n.p., Edison Laboratories, 1917] Cylinder record (Edison Blue Amberol Record). In original sleeve, with lid. Some crumbling of the inner clay liner, but the cylinder is fine and playable. This recording by the Premier Quartet is based on the sheet music and lyrics by Sam Lewis, Joe Young, and Cliff Hess, published the same year in connection with an early film version of HUCKLEBERRY FINN. One of the Premier Quartet singers, Bill Murray, was as popular in his day as Frank Sinatra or Bing Crosby a few decades later. Edison produced wax cylinders in the 1880s, and had "brown wax" cylinders in the market in the early 1890s. Amberol cylinders were introduced in 1910, and they were produced until 1929. He produced the Amberol to compete against Victor's Diamond Disk records (phonograph records had been produced since 1898). The only earlier Edison cylinder recording connected with Twain's works was a recording of Harry Humphreys reciting `Buck Fanshawe's Funeral' in 1910.
