About This Item

This is a bound volume of six issues of "The Century Illustrated Magazine" from November 1884 to April 1885. The issues are illustrated and contain works of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, etc. Three-quarter leather binding with gilt lettering and four raised bands on the spine.

Three issues within this volume contain "episodes" of the story "THE ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN" by Mark Twain; these episodes constitute the first appearance of the story, before it was published in book form. From the preface to the December 1884 issue: "The following episode is taken from an unpublished book called 'The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Tom Sawyer's Comrade.'" The following three "episodes" are included:
* December, 1884: "An Adventure of Huckleberry Finn: With an Account of the Famous Grangerford-Shepherdson Feud"
* January, 1885: "Jim's Investments, and King Sollermun"
* February, 1885: "Royalty on the Mississippi: As Chronicled by Huckleberry Finn"

Other interesting content includes:
* "The Bostonians" by Henry James
* "The Planets and the Moon" (with photographs)
* Civil War articles including Ironclads, Fort Donelson and The Battle of Bull Run
* Reminiscences of Daniel Webster

Condition:
There is a stain at the top-left corner of the back cover; fading of the leather on the spine. The leather at the bottom-left corner of the back cover is worn with the tip of the board exposed. The front and back marbled end papers each have a piece missing at the upper-outer corner. Occasional smudges, tears and stains to the pages; pages 638-640 have stains at the outer edges; 1" tear at the bottom edge of page 642; 1" tear at the outer edge of page 9. The primary condition issue with the interior is that there is staining at the upper-outer page corners from the front end paper to page 2, and the last 7 pages at the back have a larger, darker stain at the upper-outer corner (from page 951 to the last blank end paper). A large piece of the top half of the frontispiece at the beginning of the February issue. Overall the volume is in Fair condition only.
