About This Item
Robert LaVigne (1928-2014) was an artist and portraitist chiefly known for his association with the Beats. The deeper connection with Ginsberg began after Ginsberg moved in with LaVigne and Peter Orlovsky. According to Bill Morgan's The Beat Generation in San Francisco: A Literary Tour, the domestic arrangement was marked by jealousy and arguments. Ginsberg moved out; at the same time Orlovsky and LaVigne broke up. In short, Ginsberg and Orlovsky formed a relationship, leaving LaVigne so distraught he moved to Mexico to find solace. And while Ginsberg and Orlovsky remained romantic partners for decades, LaVigne eventually resumed his friendship with both men. Indeed, the recovery of his friendship with Ginsberg was such that LaVigne painted his portrait and, in 1971 designed the cover of the Grabhorn-Hoyem fine press edition of Howl.
LaVigne was sufficiently represented in the San Francisco literary milieu that he appeared, thinly veiled, in two Kerouac novels: Big Sur, in which he's known as Robert Browning, and Desolation Angels, in which he's known as Levesque.
A splendid association copy. Dust jacket is now preserved in a clear, removable archival sleeve.
