About This Item

MP3 Audio CD. E.M. Forster has penned a novel that is considered one of the best works of literature of post-Victorian England. The book is the empathic and powerful story of three very different families, whose destinies are at a crossroads at the Hertfordshire estate known by the name of Howards End. Named after the estate, the novel engages in themes that revolve around topics as diverse as politics, economics, philosophy or even England's future, showing many examples of the lifestyle and mannerisms associated with the era before the Great War.

The Schlegel siblings are from a half-German family that's quite well off, as well as properly educated. The intelligent sisters are well-read and quite idealistic, aiming to make a difference in the world by helping a poor family in the area. The Basts are the young couple they have their eye on ? a family with a lower-middle class background. While they are barely able to sustain themselves, the Wilcoxes have plenty of money, but their economic and social prejudices, as well as their materialistic ideologies prevent them from opening up too much to the warm-hearted Schlegels.

Three families, three life journeys and? an engagement; but will everything get sorted out in the end? The plot of Howards End seems to be as fascinating as it is complex, and modern day readers have found it to be just as interesting as it was in 1910, when it was published for the very first time. The book has been a topic of discussion among numerous critics, and has always managed to reveal new layers of understanding associated with the state of the world as it was during that era, as well as its impact on every level of society.

This is, without a doubt, one of E.M. Forster's most well-known and well-written novels, and anyone interested in a hot debate, an exciting romance, or just a book of musings about social and economic complications, will definitely enjoy this outstanding book.

Synopsis

E.M. Forster’s 1910 novel Howards End is definitely at the top of the author’s list of bests works (along with A Passage to India). Part of a new genre called the “condition of England” novel, Howards End is primarily set in London and Hertfordshire just a few years before World War I. The novel explores social conventions and codes of conduct through different families: sisters Margaret and Helen Schlegel, two young Bohemian intellectuals who enjoy literature and art; the Wilcoxes, a wealthy, powerful, and business-minded family; and the Basts, who are struggling in the lower-middle class. The story structure gives the reader multiple views of a single, symbolic story. From the idealism and materialism of the upper class to the belittling effects of poverty on the lower, Howards End casts light on humans and human relations in a critical, yet hopeful manner. The novel’s epigraph is also its theme: “Only connect.” Forster based his description of Howards End on his childhood home from 1883 to 1893 — a house at Rooks Nest in Hertfordshire, an area now informally known as Forster Country. The novel itself received widespread acclaim upon publication. Howards End essentially established Forester as one of England’s greatest writers, though it was the last novel he wrote. Ranked 38th on Modern Library’s “100 Best” English-language novels of the 20th century, Howards End has been adapted multiple times. Most notable is the 1992 triple Oscar-winning film version starring Emma Thompson, Vanessa Redgrave, Helena Bonham Carter, Anthony Hopkins, and Samuel West.
