Description:
London: Macmillan and Company, 1940. First edition, corrected second printing of this wartime work by Keynes. Octavo, original boards. In very good condition. Uncommon in this condition. In How to Pay for the War, John Maynard Keynes describes a macroeconomic strategy of how Britain, a nation with a population at the time of 40 million people, could conduct a long war against Germany, a nation of 80 million. At the time How to Pay for the War was written, neither the United States nor the Soviet Union were at war with either Germany or Japan. As a result, the first step for Britain to effectively conduct a war against Germany was to mobilize all its resources for production. Thus, the first two chapters of How to Pay for the War, are an argument for the need for full employment and chapter 3, Our Output Capacity and The National Income, is a manual to achieve full employment.

Description:
London: Macmillan and Co, Limited,, 1940. First edition, the corrected second impression, less common than the first impression, which was published a few months previously in green boards. How to Pay for the War was Keynes's most successful essay in persuasion, applying the ideas of his General Theory to the wartime economy. "Apart from suggesting ways of adding greatly to the financial resources of the government, this inaugurated the idea of an iron ration at low, fixed prices of a list of necessities in lower-income budgets, with government subsidies if required. He proposed also to assist families with low incomes by introducing family allowances payable directly to the mother. The net effect of these concessions would have been to effect an actual improvement in the condition of the worst-off compared with pre-war years" (ODNB). Octavo. Original orange card boards printed in black. Ink stain at foot of spine and lower edge, of book block, slight sunning and soiling to covers, contents clean… Read More
