About This Item

New York: Random House,, 1957. What a great Grinchy trick! With this coat and this hat, I look just like Saint Nick! First edition, first printing, of the first appearance of the Grinch, both as a character and as a word in the English language. The story was adapted into a 1966 animated film (narrated by Boris Karloff), a 2000 live-action film in which the Grinch was played by Jim Carrey, and a 2018 computer-animated film with Benedict Cumberbatch. Quarto. Original colour pictorial boards and endpapers. With dust jacket. Colour illustrations throughout by the author. Red ink book stamp to first page: "Property of Douglas Young 34 Great Oak Road Manhasset, N.Y.". Light wear, slight foxing to edges, internally fresh; chipping, creasing, and finger-soiling to jacket, a couple of short closed tears to front outer fold and rear panel, unclipped: a very good copy in like jacket. Younger & Hirsch 33.
