But one summer when Joan is twenty she has an affair with a castoff beau of her sister's - an affair that has far-reaching consequences, shaking Joan's hold on reality. What develops as she tries to relate what is happening around her to what is happening within and as she moves inevitably toward an irrevocable and cruel act of reprisal is the substance of Miss Grau's gripping story.
