About This Item

Harrisburg: Mt. Pleasant Press, Harrisburg: 1916. Octavo. v, 324 pages + reviews.  Dark maroon cloth; gilt-lettering dulled, without scarce dustwrapper. Neatly-written handwritten note about the author mounted to front pastedown; very good.

Pattee's novel, gothic Americana, was first published by Henry Holt in 1905. This is the second edition and self-described "author's edition" that was subsequently followed in 1924 by a "Penn State Edition." From a review within: "A delightful story of life among the mountains of Pennsylvania.. The life that a group of Pennsylvania Dutch led in a valley among the Seven Hills is indeed interesting. Their peculiar institutions, their butcherings, their schnittings, their applebutterings, and their flittings are entertaining, as well as instructive, and, carry the reader to another world. The story tells of the squire, a sort of feudal lord. his enemies, his fate, and how his daughter, 'one little girl, standing all alone, did what her heart said was right.' It also tells of another girl with Gypsy blood in her veins, and of her love. The weird influence of the House of the Black Ring is ever present..."
