Originally serialized in The Strand Magazine. Bound in red decorative cloth boards, frontispiece, and fifteen plates by Sidney Paget. On page 13, line 3 the word "you" has been printed in place of "your". And, on page 76 the illustration is a mirror image as the signature of the illustrator is reversed. Overall, a very good copy with light fading to the spine. There is slight loss of colour to the bottom edge of the front board decreasing from quarter-inch to nothing at the fore-edge. There is a light, two inch, stain to the lower portion of the fore-edge, and extending to one inch to the bottom edge. Owner's name at the top of the half-title page. The top edge is soiled, and there are a few tiny spots of foxing there and on the bottom edge, totally about ten spots. The text is clean and free of foxing or other extraneous markings. The illustration on the front board is still bright and clear, although there is a little dulling. Overall, a very good copy in collectible condition.
