About This Item

Conway, 2011. Soft cover. Very Good/No Jacket. p/b 304 pages, condition is very good, minor edge wear. Just over a million people - 923,000 men and 86,000 women - served in the Royal Navy during the Second World War. With the outbreak of the conflict, the navy needed a massive injection of manpower, and to this end, thousands of 'Hostilities Only' servicemen and women were recruited. These inexperienced recruits would serve only for the duration of the war in Britain's first real citizen navy. Many had never been to sea before; some could not swim. All over Britain, in former Butlins holiday camps, hotels, schools and factories, they were rapidly trained in the navy's different specialisms, including engineering, gunnery and flying, as well as the basics of seamanship and naval discipline Using eyewitness accounts and previously unpublished research, Brian Lavery reveals the sheer scale of this unprecedented operation and recounts the experiences of men and women who were plunged into a challenging and unfamiliar environment.
