London: Lovat Dickson,, 1936. First edition, first impression, of the author's first book, inscribed by the author on the first blank: "Best wishes, Edith Pargeter". This copy is in the scarce jacket. Edith Pargeter (1913-1995) was "a realist, immersed in history and attuned to moral questions whose pioneering work in medieval historical crime fiction" did much to consolidate the popularity of the genre. Octavo. Original red cloth, titles to spine in gilt. With dust jacket. Spine rolled, ends lightly faded, edges slightly rubbed, tips a little worn. An excellent copy in the toned jacket with a few shallow chips and nicks to extremities, minor loss to spine ends, and front panel skilfully reattached.

Description:
London: Lovat Dickson, 1936., 1936. First edition. First edition. Author's first book. Limited to 125 copies signed by the author and the illustrator, John Farleigh. Lightly rubbed at head and toe of spine, and a little uneven sunning to the spine and front cover, else very good in transparent cellulose acetate protective dust jacket. Set in Imperial Rome, this is the diary of Marcus Hortensius, a middle-aged, wealthy, respected Roman citizen in the months immediately following the execution of Paul, founder of the Christian Church. "That this is a work of such quiet beauty and power comes as no surprise to those familiar with her more recent and famous work. That she, or any writer, should have been this accomplished in her first published work is impressive beyond words."
