About This Item
Hong Kong, Hong Kong University Press, 1975, hardcover, xiv-166 pp, First Edition, First Printing, Fine in Very Good+ dustjacket. Straight, tight and clean with no wear or markings. Dustjacket shows some fading, light wear at folds, touch of foxing, tiny chips to head of spine, in new Brodart sleeve. This sequel to the author's 1937 work, Hong Kong: Birth, Adolescence and Coming of Age, was completed prior to WWII but unpublished until 1975. Sayer's long acquaintance with Hong Kong, his knowledge of the Chinese language, and his use of contemporary sources and official documents combine in this record of a crucial period in Anglo-Chinese relations and, of a Hong Kong now difficult to recall. Illustrated with 25 photographs on 10 sepia-tone plates and a fold-out map of the City of Victoria referencing the years 1845, 1862, and 1923. Nine titled appendices plus Additional Notes and Index.
