About This Item

Two Fine, as-new, cloth hardbound volumes in a gray slipcase (in its original shrink wrap) with the title page of each volume signed by both Arthur Miller and Louise Bourgeois (the latter writes "Best Wishes. / Louise Bourgeois Oct 1995." in each volume). One of an edition of 1200 slip-cased 2 volume letterpress copies published by Peter Blum Edition with 78 total pages, 10 actual-sized color reproductions of etchings by Bourgeois in volume I, 8 full-color photo collages by Bourgeois in volume 2, and a duotone photo of author and artist by Inge Morath. A small edition signed by Miller, Bourgeois, and Morath on colophon page was also available; as well as a special edition of 100 copies in tan half morocco over gray cloth, a dark gray cloth slipcase, signed by Miller and Bourgeois on colophon, and illustrated with ten original etchings by Bourgeois. This particular copy of the 2 volume work was issued unsigned by Peter Blum Edition and was later signed by Miller in his East 68th Street pied-à-terre and by Bourgeois in her townhouse on West 20th Street. A copy of this book is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art and was included in a Grolier Club exhibition of American artist's books.

Synopsis

In his long career, Arthur Miller has charted some of the most hidden aspects of the American character, and made us recognize ourselves. With Homely Girl, A Life , he turns his attention to a smaller, more intimate, canvas, but one that in its deceptive delicacy still encompasses a vast range of human fears, ambitions, and desires. Janice—the eponymous homely girl—has hated her face ever since she was a child and her mother held up Ivory Snow advertisements to her, saying, "Now that is beauty." Homely she is, but also fiercely herself. Still,it is not until she falls in love with a blind musician that she feels her full nature unfold in this exquisite portrait of a woman finding a language to describe herself. Flanked by two stories also set in Manhattan, "Fame" and "Fitter's Night," Homely Girl, A Life pays homage to a city constantly reinventing itself—and to the classic Miller themes of work, honor, and identity. "Chekhovian . . . deserves praising to the top of the highest skyscraper for its humanity, wit, depth" —A.N. Wilson
