About This Item

New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1891. Very good.. Uncommon account of the life of a South African ostrich farmer near the turn of the twentieth century. Memoirs of a South African ostrich farmer, who with her husband left England for the "colonial life" in Walmer, near Port Elizabeth, and later departed for a twelve thousand acre farm in the Karroo district. Compelling essays on botany, animal husbandry, meerkats, and ostrich psychology, interwoven with predictable but nonetheless profound racism and assorted colonialist apologetics. 7.25'' x 5''. "Authorized Edition." Original gilt-lettered orange and black pictorial cloth. Green endpapers. Ten black and white illustrations. 288 pages, followed by publisher's advertisements. Scuffing to boards; dampstaining to endpapers and some following leaves. Slight spine lean. Remnants of bookplate to front paste-down. Occasional foxing throughout.
