[From introduction by the Editors] The name of Janusz Korczak is often heard. His writings have become the possession of all nations. All over the world, educational institutions, streets and squares have been named for him. In his memory plays have been staged, films produced, and books and poems written in scores of different languages. Many people in many lands are working to perpetuate his legacyââ¬Â¦. Naturally, the greatest number of poems about Korczak have been published in Poland, where many of the most important contemporary poets have written about him. But many poems have been published in Yiddish, Hebrew, Russian, Czech, German and even Japanese. This small selection which we are presenting in English translation does not pretend to represent all the languages in which poems about Korczak have been written. It is merely a drop from the ocean of writings on this subject. The selection was made by Nathan Gross. The paintings reproduced in this book were chosen from among those submitted in a contest for children and young people which was held in Israel in 1979 under the auspices of the "Buchner Fund for the Encouragement of Research on Korczak in Israel," as well as in an international competition on the theme "How I See Korczak," which was organized by the International Korczak Society in 1982. The original paintings are in the Ghetto Fighters' House. The article "Janusz Korczak, 1878-1942: Some Notes on his Biography and Personality" was written by Yitzhak Perlis. The entire collection is, as the title indicates, a tribute by adults and children to the great Polish-Jewish educator.
