About This Item
Danbury, NH: Addison House, 1978. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Near fine. Ten poems by Cavafy paired with ten captioned black-and-white photographs by Michals placed on the following pages. The work is homoerotic, with many of the photographs incorporating male nudes. Michals explains the intent of the book in his short introduction:
"Because [Cavafy] was a man who loved other men, he demonstrated his courage by making public these private passions. He lived then, as we still do today, among those brute people who would literally destroy him both physically and spiritually for the unforgivable sin of loving the wrong person."
Michals would return to pairing his photographs with Cavafy's poems in books published by the Limited Editions Club (2003) and Twin Palms (2007).
This is one of an unspecified number of signed and numbered copies (there is also an issue of 1000 unsigned, numbered copies). First edition (without the 1000-copy limitation statement, presumably issued first?). A fine copy in white cloth-covered boards in a very good parchment jacket which has tanned, especially at the spine, as usual. Split at the base of the spine reinforced with Japanese tissue. In a near fine cloth slipcase. This is no. 42, signed by Michals.
