Jacques Bossuet was a French bishop known for his anti-protestant sermons and speeches. He was highly favored by Louis XIV for his views that the king was divinely appointed by God. His pamphlets and treatises concern the relationships between the Catholic and Protestant churches and sparked numerous responses and debates throughout the late 17th-century.
This collection of works includes short treatises by Bossuet as well as Jean Claude and William Payne.

John Gauden was a 17th-century Anglican cleric who was best known for being considered the author of Charles I's 'autobiography' 'Eikon Basilike'. One of Gauden's other works, albeit lesser-known, was the 'Eccesiae Anglicanae Suspria', or 'The Tears Sighs Complaints and Prayers of the Church of England'.
In this work, Gauden outlines the afflictions of the church along with the complaints made against the church by protestant churchgoers. Other important topics include Gauden's cautions to Christians, mistakes in vulgarity, customs of the Catholic church, the dangerous principles of Anabaptists, and importance of prayers.
This 1659 first edition includes the Catholic Church Tree engraving.

A complete set of what must have been one of the most impressive bibliographical publications of 19th Century France - indeed Europe. Copiously illustrated with facsimiles and colour reproductions, (many of which are fold-out and impressively large) of remarkable manuscripts and bindings throughout history. In contemporary 1/4 calf with raised bands and blue labels at one stage this set must have been particularly eye-catching but sadly time has taken its toll somewhat. In various states of condition ranging from Good/VG to Fair only. Most with substantial off-setting in places, many tissue-guards missing from the plates. Some occasional spotting and damp-staining to odd volumes but not terribly so. The bindings are overall in Fair condition with several split (and one entirely loose) backstrips and corners. Printed on heavy laid paper with engraved vignettes, headpieces, tailpieces and historiated initials. Binding strong and tight, pages clean and bright with light, occasional foxing. A small number of pages show toning, but overall an attractive example that shows well. Very good. . 1st. Hard. Very Good/No Jacket. Folio.

Spines with blind ruled bands and lettered in gilt. Gilt stamped Author's symbol device to the front boards. Blue marbled endpapers. Top edges gilt. Each volume with a red silk page marker. Housed in a red cloth covered slip case with marbled paper lining. The spines are a bit rubbed and there are a couple of small scratches but overall this is an attractive set of this important collection. Only a few sets were issued in these publishers delux leather bindings and they seldom turn up on the market.

Spine with gilt ruled lines, floral design and lettering. Front board with ruled panels and floral designs, all in gilt Single gilt ruled border to the rear board and board edges. Gilt inner dentelles. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Armorial bookplate of noted author of books on folklore and topography, Sir George Laurence Gomme (1853 - 1916) on the front pastedown. Some offsetting to the endpapers from the leather turn-ins. A little rubbing to the extremities and the spine faded to an attractive brown but overall still a lovely copy of this scarce work in a fine quality binding. The binding is unsigned but is certainly the work of a master bookbinder.
