Oxford: Printed at the Clarendon Press by Bensley, Cooke, and Collingwood Printers to the University, London: L. F. C. & J. Rivington, 1817. Three volumes 4to (13 x 10 1/2 inches). Illustrated with 65 plates and maps, complete. Two of the maps are double-page. Finely bound near contemporary full dark blue hard grain morocco, decorative gilt border enclosing inner gilt rules and gilt corner crowns all enclosing a decorative gilt floral frame, spine gilt in compartments and gilt lettered direct, inner turn-ins with double gilt rules, all edges gilt. A superb binding in truly remarkable condition. Some foxing internally to a few quires, overall internally very clean. With a long inscription on the front fly of volume 1 by the 1st Marquess Wellesley (1760-1842), Governor General of Bengal, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland and brother of the Duke of Wellington: "To Mr. Thomas Rich. The Gift of His affectionate, attached, and Grateful Friend. Remember the first words you read in This Bible !!! Meditate upon these things, Give thyself wholly to them that thy profiting may appear To All'". Signed Wellesley and dated Kingston House [Knightsbridge, London] 27th February 1842. The three volumes weigh just over 28lbs.Interestingly Wellesley is, through his eldest daughter Lady Charles Bentinck, a great great great grandfather of Queen Elizabeth II; his portrait hangs in the throne room of Buckingham Palace.
