Roberts, David. 1275pp. Probably the finest 'family Bible' we have ever seen or had for sale. 39 tinted lithographic plates by the great nineteenth century lithographers - 'Day and Son'. Each of the full page landscape plates after David Roberts - the great nineteenth century travel artist famous for his views of Arabia, Egypt and the ancient near east. The plates are as follows: frontispiece, additional title page, 29 other views (Including several of Egypt a view of the Roman forum and one of the acropolis - Athens), 6 maps and plans and finally 2 family register plates (printed to both sides - 4 pages in all - none filled in). All plates tissue guarded. Ornate and beautiful blue silk-backed endpapers and paste-downs with rich gilt work to the marins of the interior boards and endpapers. A gilt embossed leather onlay to the front paste-down - 'presented to Walter Berdoe, Esq., by the teachers and scholars of Camden Road Chapel Sunday School, as a token of their appreciation of his valuable and indefatigable labours as superintendent of the school. April, 1859'. All edges gilt. Two blue ribbon page-dividers (faded to the head). Also is a loosely inserted is a note written in ink on embossed paper (Camden road villas) with wire lines : 'At a meeting of the officers and Teachers of Camden Road Chapel Sunday School, held in the school-room on Monday evening, January 24th 1859 - it was moved by Miss Hall seconded by Mr Hunch, supported by Mr Freer, and carried unanimously-' So this Bible comes with early provenance. All edges gilt. Bound in full brown morocco leather embellished or embossed in High Victorian decoration - slightly gothic in design with a central panel made up of numerous 'fleur-de-lys' - each within a diamond shaped inner panel. Five raised bands to the spine. The title embossed in gilt to the spine. Some quite significant rubbing with loss to the lower board corners - most notable to the lower rear board corner (loss of both outer leather and some board). Some rubbing to the head and tail of the spine, the raised bands, other board corners and to several other peripheries. Two creases to the upper corner of the frontispiece- in no way affecting the image. The extreme lower corner of the additional engraved title with light tide-mark bearly affecting the margin and in no way the image. The very occasional soil mark. The extreme tips of a number of lower page corners have been turned. A break or split to the inner margin immediately after the front endpaper. Both boards remain very firmly attached.
