San Francisco: A.M. Robertson, 1899. First edition. Fine, with the original printed envelope, chipped. Small 8vo, unpag. pamphlet in original wrappers, printed in red and black, saddle stitched. The first appearance in book-form of Markham's famous poem, which was first issued as a supplement to the San Francisco Examiner after the celebrated painting by Jean-Francois Millet had arrived in the city. "A poetic J'accuse on behalf of exploited workers that galvanized the Left throughout the English-speaking world" (Kevin Starr, California: A History, p. 160) An attractive little book, not common in this condition.
