About This Item
Columbia University Press, 2012. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. Inscribed on the front end free paper: "4/30/13, to John, It's always great to meet a scientific-literate Nittany Lion! Michael Mann." The title of the book references the shape of the graph that Mann and several colleagues produced that showed the way global warming had rapidly accelerated with industrialization and the use of fossil fuels, a lightning bolt of an image that was contentious and galvanizing. Mann is a professor and the director of the Earth System Science Center at Penn State (the Nittany Lions!). With other scientists he jointly received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007 for his work in the International Panel on Climate Change, and in 2012 he was awarded the Hans Oescheger Medal fo the European Geosciences Union. He also cofounded Real Climate dot org. From the jacket: "The ongoing assault on climate science in the United States has never been more aggressive, more blatant, or more widely publicized than in the case of the Hockey Stick graph." Blurbs by Bill McKibben, Bill Nye, James Lovelock, and Paul Ehrlich among others. Very near fine with light bumping to upper corners of boards, in a near fine jacket with a price sticker from the Firefly Bookstore in Kutztown, PA, on its rear panel. We invite you to explore our dedicated, growing collection of signed and inscribed climate change books. Please inquire for photos.

About Rural Hours
Rural Hours (formerly Wood + River = Books, est. 2019) specializes in ecology, natural history, nature writing, the environment, environmental literature, and contemporary essay, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions. We draw our name from the popular-but-then-forgotten book by Susan Fenimore Cooper (published in 1850), generally considered the first work of environmental creative nonfiction by a woman in the U.S. We are interested in challenging and expanding the canon of environmental literature and finding books that tell remarkable stories and illuminate the tradition of writing about place and natural history.
