Including his debut novel 'HMS Ulysses' HMS Ulysses was based on MacLean's experiences in the Royal Navy during World War II. A critical success, this work was regarded in the same vein as Herman Wouk's 'The Cain Mutiny' and Nicholas Monsarrat's 'The Cruel Sea'. The Guns of Navarone is set during World War II on a fictitious Greek Island, Navarone. It is set during the Dodecanese Campaign, the Allies' campaign to capture the German held Greek islands in the Aegean in 1943.Alistair Maclean was a Scottish novelist who wrote popular thrillers and adventure stories.With the original unclipped dustwrappers. A very smart set of Alistair Maclean's early works. In the publisher's original cloth binding. With unclipped dustwrappers. Externally, very smart. Minor bumping to the head and tail of spine. Dustwrapper is smart. Prior owner's shelf label to the tail of spine to HMS Ulysses. Chips to the extremities. Small clothed tear to the tail of front wrap. Dustwrapper for Guns of Navarone are chipped to the extremities. Closed tear to the front joint of this wrap, causing the spine to lift. Internally, both volumes are firmly bound. Prior owner's bookplate removed to the verso of front endpaper of HMS Ulysses. Prior owner's inscription to the recto of rear endpaper of HMS ULYSSES in pencil. Prior owner's inscription to the recto of front endpaper of 'The Guns of Navarone'. Pages are very bright and otherwise clean. Very Good Indeed
