About This Item

London: Thomas and William Boone, 1856. Six volumes. 8vo. xxiv, 522; xiii, [3], 500; xi, [1], 427, [1]; xvii, [1], 479, [1]; x, [2], 444; vii, [1], 463, [1] pp. 56 engraved maps. Uniformly bound in half-brown calf over marbled boards, marbled fore-edges, tooled & decorated spine, gilt & green morocco spine labels (some rubbing, scuffing, occasional wear, slight bumping to some corners, slight sunning to spines), still a very good set, William McDonald, Jr. (1921-2010), noted historian of Classical Roman architecture and art, w/ ownership markings on front pastedown, and other ownership markings on endpapers. Revised & expanded edition of this classic history of the famed campaigns in Spain, Portugal, and the south of France during the Napoleonic Wars. This rousing eyewitness account is dedicated to Wellington, and provides one of the best specimens of military history in any language, detailing the long series of campaigns and battles with the imagination of a great romantic writer. Napier (1785-1860) entered the Royal Irish Artillery in 1800, later transferred to the 43rd and then the 42nd Infantry where he was wounded a number of times, and fought at the retreat to Corunna, marched to Talavera in the famous forced march, and aided in the pursuit of Massena.
