With 47 full-page illustrations engraved facsimile from the author's drawings. London: Kegan Paul, Trench, and Co., 1889 8vo. xii,168pp. frontispiece, 47 plates. "... an attempt to give a realistic sketch of life in the Western Sudan. Many of the incidents herein related l have actually witnessed during some one of my journeys in Africa. The places and peoples l have named are of real existance, as are also the languages quoted,..." Spine discoloured and the covers slightly faded and rubbed, in the publisher's decorated red cloth with the coloured illustration mounted on the upper board, a nice copy of the first edition.
