About This Item
Random House, Inc, 1988. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Near Fine. Association copy, with the ownership signature of Jane and Grant McConnell on the FFEP. Grant McConnell was an important figure in the Sierra Club's expansion in the Northwest, particularly in the successfully advocacy for the North Cascades National Park, and he is mentioned in this book on at least a dozen pages. In the index McConnell has added two additional pages where he is mentioned in the same blue pen as the signature. A graduate of Reed College, he earned a PhD in political science from Berkeley and became the chair of the Political Science Department at the University of Chicago before becoming the chair of the department at UC Santa Cruz from 1969-1980. Very good plus with sunning and light wear to lower edges of boards and a little black smudge on the upper text block corner. In a near fine jacket except for a piece of a half-inch Scotch tape errantly affixed to the upper right corner of front cover (not a mend, just a piece of tape). A nice collectible for a Sierra Club or conservation enthusiast. Please inquire for photos.

About Rural Hours
Rural Hours (formerly Wood + River = Books, est. 2019) specializes in ecology, natural history, nature writing, the environment, environmental literature, and contemporary essay, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions. We draw our name from the popular-but-then-forgotten book by Susan Fenimore Cooper (published in 1850), generally considered the first work of environmental creative nonfiction by a woman in the U.S. We are interested in challenging and expanding the canon of environmental literature and finding books that tell remarkable stories and illuminate the tradition of writing about place and natural history.
