Boston: C. E. Goodspeed, 1918. A new edition, illustrated. Edited with additions by Frank E. Bayley and Charles E. Goodspeed. Bound in green cloth, ex-library copy with bookplates on the front end papers, a small embossed stamp on each title-page and bookplates, etc, on the rear endpapers. A very clean tight set. This was first published in 1834 and continues to serve as a primary source of information for the student of early American art. Given the deficiencies of the original edition, the editors have endeavored to print the original text with judicious pruning and corrections of conspicuous errors. The editors also added an addenda comprising brief accounts of several hundred painters, engravers, sculptors and architects. This includes all of those working up to 1835.
