This is a handsome, scarce first edition set of "The History of the Rise and Progress of the Arts of Design in the United States" by William Dunlap in wonderful condition. 1834 1st edition; George P. Scott & Co.; New York. The set is beautifully bound in three-quarter leather with five raised bands on the spine, gilt top page edges, marbled covers and end papers, and gilt lettering and decorations on the spine. Complete set in two volumes. This work, for which Dunlap is best known, is widely considered to be an invaluable source of information about artists, collecting, and artistic life in the colonial and federal periods. William Dunlap was a pioneer of American theater who founded the National Academy of Design (and also painted a portrait of George Washington now owned by the U.S. Senate).
Condition:
This is a wonderful condition set both inside and out with very minimal wear. Rubbing of the leather along the edges of the spines; light wear to the corners and light edge wear at the bottom edges of the boards near the outer corners. Both volumes are tightly bound with no cracks and no loose pages. Bright gilt lettering and decorations on the spines; bright gilt top page edges. Both volumes are clean on the inside and nearly appear unread with only some scattered light foxing to a few random pages in volume I; no stains, tears or writing found. A remarkable set.
